SAPpesaru – Garlic Dal

I love Garlic in any form and in anything. Sappesaru or the garlic dal is one of my most favourite dal. This creamy dal, flavoured completely with garlic is best served with  Ragi mudde or Steamed rice. This dal is to die for…..

1 cup – Toor dal or Moong dal with peel
1/4 cup – Tamarind paste
5 no – Green chilly ( more if you like it spicy)
10 no – Garlic pods
Salt to taste

For tempering
1 tbsp – Oil
1 tsp – Mustard seeds
10 nos – Curry leaves

Coriander leaves for garnishing

.Pressure cook toor dal well and cool.
.Dry roast the green chillies

Blend the cooked dal, roasted green chillies, garlic, tamarind paste, salt and raw garlic in a mixer till the dal turns smooth.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Let the curry leaves crackle. Add the blended dal and immediately switch off the flame. Do not heat the dal. If the dal cooks then it will lose the raw garlicy flavour…

Use it the same day. Keep it in room temperature and do not heat it. Not that itll spoil the dal but itll take away the authentic taste of it.
Serve it with hot steaming rice with ghee or with Ragi mudde.
You can also serve some roasted green chillies, if you like spice…

  1. Hi ! I’m a novice home baker , looking to work on my food Photography.. absolutely enamoured by your work , love your styling and the fact that every picture looks different, unlike a lot of food photographers who generally adopt a theme … Do you conduct classes on food styling and photography? I would really appreciate any guidance from you …
